Aratus (Ἄρατος ὁ Σολεύς) c.a. 315 BC/310 BC – 240 BC: a Greek poet.
His main work is the poem known as Phaenomena (Φαινόμενα "Appearances")
whose first half is based on a lost work of Eudoxus of Cnidus. It
describes the constellations and other celestial phenomena.
Aratus was neither a mathematician nor observer and quite interestingly
his poem describes some phenomena which are inconsistent with any one
supposed latitude of the spectator, and others which could not coexist
at any one epoch: an intriguing fact to be investigated further by those
looking for the origin of the Zodiac.
I am attaching a link to download a digital copy of a rare English
translation of the Phainomena from a 1885 edition preserved for
generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by Google
as part of a project of books digitalization. This book has
survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter
the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject to
copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. I believe this is
an important starting point for those interested in learning about
astrology.
