The misdeeds of testosterone, DHT, androgens

Experts suspect that gender differences in mortality patterns may be influenced at least in part by sex hormones, namely the male hormone testosterone and the female hormone estrogen. The conspicuous peak in the sex-mortality ratio at puberty, for example, coincides with increased testosterone production in men. Because the male hormone has been linked with aggression and competitiveness as well as libido, some researchers ascribe this spike in male mortality to “testosterone toxicity.” {{Later in life, testosterone puts men at risk biologically}} as well as behaviorally. It increases blood levels of the bad cholesterol (known as LDL, for low-density lipoprotein) and decreases levels of the good one (HDL, for high-density lipoprotein), putting men at greater risk of heart disease and stroke.

Other effects of androgens on the long run :

– Candida Overgrowth, Candida albicans, yeast infections

– shrinkage of hair follicles, hair loss

– hirsutism

– neural and vascular damage, Alzheimer’s disease
– heart disease and stroke
– aging in general

Estrogen, on the other hand, has beneficial effects on cardiovascular health, lowering LDL cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol. A recent study at the University of Washington suggests that estrogen may exert these effects by regulating the activity of liver enzymes involved in cholesterol metabolism.

Now the interesting question is : how to put a stop to androgens and how to promote estrogens ?

Here is an extensive list of herbs and food that can help for that and to increase life span (antifungals and androgen reducing are linked) :

– green tea : 60% reduction of sebum after 8 weeks using a formulation containing 3% green tea extract

– pygeum leaf : antiseptic, contains natural sterols and fatty acids ; have an anti-androgenic or sebum-reducing effect ; cleanse and regenerate the liver ; contains an antiandrogenic compound atraric acid ; the highest antiandrogenic effect ; has a well known antiandrogenic effect by binding to the androgen receptor and shows effective results in treating BPH and consistent and significant reduction of DHT ; Phytoestrogenic herbs lower testosterone by increasing estrogen and anti-5 alpha reductase
– saw palmetto fruit : saw palmetto is antiseptic, antifungal ; contains natural sterols and fatty acids ; decrease DHT ; Has anti-androgenic effects lowering the production of male hormones including excess hair growth ; treat bladder and prostate conditions ; prostate support ; prevent testosterone from converting into DHT by inhibiting the enzyme that is responsible for this process ; can give you fuller hair and a clearer skin, because DHT is associated with hair loss and acne ; reduce 5 alpha reductase
– borage oil : The gamma-linoleic acid found in borage oil can help to dilute sebum or oil, secreted by the sebaceous glands.
So using borage or evening primrose oil in OCM might reduce sebum production.

(Great for candida sufferers) Nettle blocks lactic acid cycle which starves cancer cells ; is used as an antifungal for urination disorders and irritable bladder ; decrease DHT ; stimulate prolactin production in the body.  These herbs are most commonly used to prevent testosterone from converting into DHT by inhibiting the enzyme that is responsible for this process
– kudzu root : plant from China and Japan. Rich in flavonoids, removes redness, flaking and tightness of the skin. Inhibits the activity of phospholipase PLA2, ensures protective effect on sensitive skin, softens skin lesions caused by rosacea. Kudzu contains the isoflavone daidzein which has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticancer (related to genistein, it is anti ñ leukemic; namely acts against leukaemia) agent. Kudzu root contains: Phytoestrogens including the isoflavonoids genistein, daidzein, formononetin and biochanin-A. Kudzu root is also rich in isoflavone glycosides, such as daidzein and puerarin. Depending on its growing conditions, the total isoflavone content varies from 1.77 – 12.0%, with puerarin in the highest concentration, followed by daidzin and daidzein. Kudzu also contains many other flavonoid-type antioxidants and is rich in protein (10).
Kudzu root’s compounds can affect neurotransmitters including serotonin, GABA and glutamate. Kudzu’s mechanism perhaps includes brain reward pathways and alcohol metabolism. Kudzu contains the isoflavone daidzein which has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticancer (related to genistein, it is anti – leukemic; namely acts against leukaemia) agent. It is also a unique source of the isoflavone puerarin. Kudzu has been also used against cluster headaches, migraine, allergies, diarrhea and for the control of some postmenopausal symptoms. It is also studied for Alzheimer’s disease. It may help at diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hypertension (1).
Kudzu has been studied, as a herb, against alcoholism. It traditionally has been used in China against alcoholism and hangover. Its root has been used traditionally to prevent excessive alcohol consumption, while its flower has been used traditionally to detoxify the liver and alleviate the symptoms of alcoholism (1).

– lavender oil : DHT was inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner by both lavender oil and tea tree oil ; lavender oil is a powerful antifungal agent that fights and prevents skin and nail infections, including Candida albicans. The oil fraction of pumpkin seed has been shown to inhibit 5 alpha-reductase. The mixture of delta 7-sterols has been shown to inhibit the binding of DHT to androgen receptors.

In addition to the findings on polyol-soluble licorice extract P-U, clove extract and peppermint extract showed testosterone 5 .ALPHA.-reductase inhibition, arnica extract and rose fruit extract showed androgen receptor binding inhibition.
